Below we briefly describe projects, which are on going or in conception.
These include cattle, sheep, donkey and horses. They are adequately housed, fed and medicated. These animals are integrated in the farm harmoniously for therapy, biological fertilization and recreation.
A series of garden beds are constructed for all year around cultivation of vegetables: tomatoes, cucumber, greens, pepper to name a few. Appropriate technology is applied for irrigation, weeding, pest control and fertilization.
Farm Outdoors Furniture Fabrication
Using traditional Gambian handmade technology, the farmyard is furnished with benches, chairs, tables, mats and beds. This furniture is installed in various parts of the farm to assure comfort, quietness, and place for meditation and relaxation.
During the rainy season, from June to October, we cultivate peanuts. We use tradition methods to do this. The peanut straw is used as animal feed. The peanuts are used for cooking several Gambian dishes.
Round Hut Construction
Thatched roof Gambian round huts are built as needed on various parts of the farm.
Phantasy-rich signboards are designed to improve communication and provide indications.
Biologic ecological methods are used to control weed on the farm. No chemicals!!
We believe in the old adage of “a healthy mind is a healthy body”. To this end, our professionals have developed a series of activities to assist people to manage their lifestyle to control diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, burnout, mobbing, as well as substance dependency.
The activities and programs include:
- Outings and Bird watching
- Animal-assisted therapy
- Arts and crafts
- Spiritual care, Yoga and Spa
- Participation and discussion of current events
- Special presentations like theatre, concerts, conferences and seminars
- Outdoor camping
- Horse/donkey riding and charting
Activity therapists work closely with nurses, doctors, dieticians, social workers, and other members of the team. These professionals participate with each resident and his or her family to design an individualized care plan.
Therapists get to know each resident and to understand their likes and dislikes. Based on a comprehensive assessment, they design a program of activities that engage each individual intellectually, physically, and socially to enhance their health and life.
Environmental Education Programs
Our Environmental Education programs get kids involved by teaching them how to plant trees, build gardens and grow vegetables. They are introduce to the “hows and whats” of healthy eating.
We develop research programs, which are aimed at improving the flora, fauna and food production of The Gambia. For that we highly welcome all individuals, institutions of agriculture, universities and technical schools to participate in their respective areas of interest and expertise. We strongly believe in using appropriate technology to improve the livelihood of the Gambian population. However this needs a significant amount of training and applied research in the field of agriculture and technology. Examples of research themes could be as follows:
1. Improving tools traditionally used for weeding, tilling the soil, harvesting and transportation of harvest
2. Compost trench digging and maintenance
3. Biological pest control (termites, fruit flies, white flies, etc.)
4. Nursery establishment: soil preparation, bagging, seed selection, seed preparation and storage, seeding, manuring, transplanting
5. Storage of seeds, and fungal infection: Aflatoxins
